NAMI Basics is an education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illnesses. The NAMI Basics course is taught by trained teachers who are the parent or caregiver of children and teens with serious behavioral challenges.

The course consists of six classes that meet weekly for 2 ½ hour sessions. 6:00 to 8:30 PM.

Dr. Read Sulik is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, adult psychiatrist, and pediatrician who was recently appointed assistant commissioner for Chemical and Mental Health Services Administration for the Minnesota Department of Human Services. He speaks extensively on depression, anxiety, trauma, suicide, ADHD, and more. His recent awards include the 2007 Psychiatrist of the Year and 2008 Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Psychiatric Society, as well as the 2008 Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed the Triple Board Combined Residency Program at the University of Kentucky.

The State of Oregon recently revised education laws and policies, changing the requirements for receiving a high school diploma. They have also offered students new opportunities for success through Modified and Extended Diplomas. Meeting these new requirements depends on parents, students and educators preparing for and understanding them. Come learn how your student will be impacted by these changes.

This workshop will present what the diploma options in Oregon are as well as the expanded options programs, credit requirements, and credit for proficiency. Participants will also discover which diplomas automatically qualify for federal financial aid, admission to the college and university system, and military service.

It then covers the choice of college or employment and career options. These could include Social Security work incentive programs, Vocational Rehabilitation programs and the Ticket to Work program. This workshop would be most helpful for parents of students ages 15 to 21, and the professionals who work with them.

Oregon Zoo's VIP Safari.

Recognizing that most kids enjoy the zoo, but some have a harder time than others getting here, Oregon Zoo is inviting children with disabilities and chronic or terminal illnesses, plus their immediate families, to a free evening as a VIP at the zoo on Wednesday, September 8th. We are offering this experience for free as a community service, since medical expenses often prevent these families from enjoying a night out as a family.

While the event is primarily aimed at medically fragile and disabled children age 18 and under, we certainly do not intend to turn any away based on age! This is also intended for siblings and parents - we want this to be a special evening for the entire family.

Zoo Registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. Registration tables will be set up in the zoo's entry plaza, and guests will check in by the last name on their RSVP.

Free admission to the zoo and free train rides Our popular Wildlife Live show, featuring spectacular bird flights over the heads of the audience, will have three special performances at 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 for this event.

At the Family Farm, pettable animals will be out for a hands-on experience. The area is staffed by our ZooTeens, who want to remind you that the goat yard is wheelchair friendly!

The zoo grounds will remain open until 8:00.

We're really looking forward to this special evening.
